Forward to the Future

Posted: February 21, 2008, 3:56 pm

My name is Evan Hildreth. I also answer to “Odd Evan,” “madcrasher,” and “RadioShack.” I am a tech-head that is continually inspired by the power that the internet and the web gives to average, everyday people. And in one week I will no longer be a Furman student.

Let me say that one more time for emphasis: In one week I will no longer be a Furman student.

My last class was yesterday. My last exam is tomorrow. And a week from now I’ll be done with my internship (and hopefully the research paper that goes with it). So where does that leave my websites?

Yes, websites. With an ‘s’ on the end. There’s this one, then there’s my first one, my podcast network, my literary magazine, my record company, a JavaScript weblog that I have yet to start, and, finally, my production company. Did I forget anything?

I’ve been thinking of how to improve and run each of them. The biggest thing that’s happened is I’ve completely fallen in love with WordPress. So much so that I’ve gotten a few of my friends to run their web sites with it. And I’m going to be moving Anticipation and all related sites to it as well. I’m actually thinking of turning whumf into a blog network on top of the literary magazine and running the other blogs off of it…

That’s my problem. I come up with about 50 ideas in a given week, and my feeble attempts to link them together often just results in chaos. And the fact that I’m going to be entering the “real world” in the very near future is calling into question my ability to run all these websites effectively. I’ve already had to kill off bsod Magazine/bsodTV, and Flash w/o Flash is probably not going to be renewed, not to mention FUwiki. And that’s with me as a student. Once I’ve got an actual job that, while it won’t follow me home at the end of the day (I’m making sure of that!), will probably leave me emotionally and creatively drained, I’m probably not going to want to spend a lot of time on any of these sites. So where does that leave me?

You can probably tell my now that this is a very rambling post. Honestly, if I hadn’t spent the morning reading a blog post about blogging, I wouldn’t be doing this now. And I know that the two of you that actually read this probably know me in real life and are tired of me going on about my latest ideas. Or not. Honestly, I don’t know where I’m going from here other than my biggest priority is to find a job and upgrade my technology. After that, though, here’s my plan for oddEvan.com:

  • Post once per week – I need to keep my writing muscle in good form. Whether it’s from some fanfic I’m working on or just something on life, I need to keep in practice. Not to mention that no matter where I end up, I’m going to be leaving friends behind, and this blog is the best way for them to keep up with me.
  • Integrate the Pownce feed – This is a way for me to share links and brief random thoughts with you quickly. They’ve got an API, and I’m surprised there’s not really a good WordPress plugin yet.
  • More links! – Besides the Pownce stuff. I mean seriously, there’s a wealth of good blogs and sites that I read on a regular basis, and that says as much about me as anything I write.
  • Lifestream it – I’ve got something kinda-sorta at this page, but I’m 90% sure I can program something myself. The basic idea is to pull all the feeds from my different online pages and compile them into one feed similar to the infamous facebook News Feed. In other words, if I sneeze online, it’ll show up on this page. Any feature ideas (or know of a service better than soup)?

I’ll be posting more ideas here in the days to come. The idea is to consolidate my online presence and trim off any unnecessary fat. The less I have to worry about, the more time I can spend bringing back the WHAT?-cast. Which I am so totally doing. Maybe.

Cheers.

Odd Evan was of uncertain fate
Enthused to begin with clean slate
    Many things were begun
    and they sounded like fun
    But sanity said, “Consolidate!”

nice website! I’m glad i have so many venues with which to stalk you in your absence.
