Another Introspective Rambling Post

Posted: April 1, 2008, 12:50 am

A bit has happened since my last post about the future of my online empire. I’ve been able to do some thinking since then, but I would like some feedback from anyone reading. Anyway, here goes.

My current websites are:

  1. madcrasher.com
  2. oddEvan.com
  3. root -1 Podcasts
  4. Recovering Pharisee Productions
  5. Anticipation Records
  6. whumf
  7. kitsu.us
  8. flash w/o Flash

As I said before, that’s too many for one guy to do. Heck, even two is too many. I’ve had people tell me that there hasn’t been much “madcrasher” stuff going on lately, and that’s mostly because I’ve been focusing on this site. Well, let the pruning begin.

As mentioned earlier, root -1 is no more. It’s redundant, hard to pronounce, and neglected. So long. Also, flash w/o Flash is for sale. The site itself says as much, and I also posted it on craigslist.

Where does that leave us?

  1. madcrasher.com
  2. oddEvan.com
  3. Recovering Pharisee Productions
  4. Anticipation Records
  5. whumf
  6. kitsu.us

Let’s see… kitsu.us is a domain I bought for the heck of it. I’m currently using it for my internal network, test servers, and other whatnot. It’s not serious, and it won’t be. Sort of like a non-oddEvan oddEvan. I’ll probably just give it to Ronyo and be done with it.

Whumf is a bit of a pickle. It was originally going to be a literary magazine, but the person currently slated to be editor-in-chief is considering backing out of the internet business. Honestly, I don’t blame him. But whumf is too good a name to not do anything with. Desisions, decisions… but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

That leaves:

  1. madcrasher.com
  2. oddEvan.com
  3. Recovering Pharisee Productions
  4. Anticipation Records

Here’s where the fun begins.

oddEvan.com is in a sort of quasi-limbo. I’m going to seriously overhaul the theme once my job search is over and I have time. I’m going to try to turn this into more of a tumblelog than a normal blog. Or maybe have the two side-by-side? Similar to how John Gruber organizes his site: the short-form “linked list” that is posted throughout the day as well as the slightly-less-regular long-form posts. Either way, I want to be able to show all the craziness that’s out on the internet as well as post rough drafts of stuff I’m working on. The big question is whether I want to stay with WordPress which, with the new version 2.5, is veery niiice, or whether I want to switch to something like chyrp that, while is working okay in testing, is in its own state of flux. Comments?

Anticipation Records is… still being worked on. But I’m 90% I know the purpose now. Anticipation was started with 2 questions in mind: how can Christian music be made better, and what role does a record company play in the 21st century? The first question was simple: focus on the artist’s faith, not the content of the music. Don’t try to sound like everyone else but let God do his work in his own time. The second question has been more of a challenge. While I would love Anticipation to be the type of organization that provides all sorts of material and resources to its artists, it would never be able to grow beyond being an outlet for me and my friends. Currently, I’m leaning towards Anticipation being more of a membership organization than a traditional record company. Membership is by invitation only, mind you; applications are accepted, but not everyone is allowed in. The whole idea is to build the image that being in Anticipation means something, giving greater credibility to our artists. Good?

So what about the productions side? That’s where Recovering Pharisee Productions comes in. A brief talk with my business partner revealed a key weakness in the name: not everyone is a recovering pharisee. I’m also realizing that having a huge internet empire is not all its cracked up to be. Someday, maybe, but for now, I’m scaling this back down to an Evan-sized venture. So now Recovering Pharisee is my production company. David Letterman has Worldwide Pants, I’ve got Recovering Pharisee. …and it needs to be updated. Anyway, I’ll be doing freelance and production work through it, such as web designs, videos, and musical artists.

Musical artists like madcrasher. That’s right folks, he hasn’t gone anywhere. I’ll (God-willing) be finishing up production on the full-length album Identity by the end of the year as well as working on the next project, a 5-song EP tentatively titled Exile. After that, it’s anyone’s guess. But madcrasher.com will be getting the overhaul shortly. It’s being moved to a WordPress-powered site and given three sections: Blog and Updates, The WHAT?-cast, and Discography. Blog… is a blog. The WHAT?-cast is the new video version of my old podcast that has lots of outside help and should be released once a month starting in September. Hopefully. Discography is a list of songs, download links, and a little radio player so you can listen to it.

Confused? Then ask questions. Ideas? Say them. I would wrap this up in a neat little package, but look at the time, people; I need to get to bed!

...oh, crap, it’s April 1.
